IPG Number: IPG242

Summary

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued full guidance to the NHS in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland on transcranial magnetic stimulation for severe depression.

The technique involves placement of a small coil over the scalp; a rapidly alternating current is then passed through the coil wire, producing a magnetic field that passes through the brain. The application of the magnetic field may be used to either stimulate or inhibit specific areas of the brain.
