Minimally invasive two-incision surgery for total hip replacement

Guidance issued Guidance issued

Number: IPG112

Summary:

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued full guidance to the NHS in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland on minimally invasive two-incision surgery for total hip replacement.

Description:

The most common indication for a total hip replacement is degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) of the hip joint. Other indications include rheumatoid arthritis, injury, bone tumours, and necrosis of the hip bone.

This procedure involves two small incisions, one at the front of the hip and one at the back, rather than the one large incision used in a traditional hip replacement. The same prostheses that would be used in a traditional hip replacement are inserted using specially designed instruments.
