CG15 Type 1 diabetes in children, young people and adults: NICE guideline
The published NICE clinical guideline on Type 1 diabetes. It is a shorter version that the full guideline and contains the recommendations for health professionals and NHS bodies.
We have updated our guidance on screening for other conditions in children and young people with type 1 diabetes (recommendation 1.3.5.1, pages 6, 28, 87 and 97); we have removed the recommendation to re-test for coeliac disease at least every 3 years after diagnosis. This update follows the development of ‘Coeliac disease: recognition and assessment of coeliac disease’ (NICE clinical guideline 86, 2009).
The changes are as follows, and are shown in the document as greyed out text.
Page 6
Children and young people with type 1 diabetes should be offered screening for:
- coeliac disease at diagnosis
- and at least every 3 years thereafter until transfer to adult services
- thyroid disease at diagnosis and annually thereafter until transfer to adult services
- retinopathy annually from the age of 12 years
- microalbuminuria annually from the age of 12 years.
